Thuraya Returns with Skyphone, Could be the First True Universal Satellite Smartphone

Satellite connectivity in smartphones has been a hot topic lately, but Thuraya, a veteran in the field, has been strangely quiet. They actually launched the first Android smartphone with satellite support back in 2018! Well, this year they’re making a comeback with the Skyphone, and it promises to be a game-changer.

This isn’t your average satellite phone with just SOS buttons. Thuraya’s Skyphone will boasts full-fledged calling capabilities over the company’s satellite network, giving you a limitless functionality even in remote areas.

Thuraya remains quiet on most specs, but we do know the Skyphone will sport a large 6.67″ AMOLED display protected by Gorilla Glass (version still unknown). Powering it all will be an eight-core Qualcomm processor (specific model still unknown), but known Google Android 14 will be straight out of the box.

The company also did mention that the device will sport three camera sensors on the rear just as seen on the image above, but the specific details of those individual lenses are still not know.

However, we do know that a hefty 50MP selfie snapper will be used on the front. Durability is also covered with IP67 dust and water resistance. Oh, and don’t worry, there’s a retractable antenna for those crucial satellite calls.

What truly sets Skyphone apart though, is its global satellite reach. Unlike competitors who restrict satellite functionality by region, Skyphone will work anywhere with Thuraya satellite visibility or a Thuraya roaming partner network.

The price tag for this device still remains hidden, but we’ll know more by the third quarter of this year, which is when Skyphone is expected to hit the market. So stay tuned for updates.
