Great news for PC builders! As AMD Extends AM5 Platform Support with more details about its next-generation Ryzen 9000 processors and the supporting AM5 platform, bringing exciting developments for both performance and longevity.
AMD Extends AM5 Platform Support Until 2027 (Ryzen 9000 Ready)
Ryzen 9000: Power Efficiency Takes Center Stage
While AMD reiterated its claims of significant performance gains for the Ryzen 9000 series compared to its predecessor, the company also highlighted a strong focus on power efficiency. This is a welcome change, especially considering the recent thermal throttling issues plaguing some of Intel’s high-end processors.

Three out of the four Ryzen 9000 CPUs boast lower default power limits compared to their Ryzen 7000 counterparts, despite delivering double-digit performance improvements. AMD also reports lower CPU temperatures across the board, with reductions of up to 7° Celsius at the same settings.
This focus on efficiency is a strategic move. It not only reduces power consumption but also potentially avoids thermal issues that can lead to crashes and instability. Builders can still push the performance envelope through overclocking with AM5 Platform Support Precision Boost Overdrive, but for everyday users, the cooler and more power-efficient operation of the Ryzen 9000 series is a significant benefit.

AM5 Socket Gets a Longevity Boost – AM5 Platform Support
In another piece of good news for builders, AMD has extended its guaranteed support timeline for the AM5 socket to at least 2027, with the possibility of further extension. This is a two-year increase from the previously announced “2025+” timeframe
While “support” can have various interpretations, AMD’s commitment provides greater peace of mind for those who have invested in, or are planning to invest in, an AM5 motherboard. Unlike the budget-oriented AM4 platform that continues to receive repackaged Ryzen 5000 CPUs, the AM5 platform is expected to see future generations of truly new processors.

Ryzen 9000 Compatibility and New Chipsets
The good news continues for AM5 users with the extension of the AM5 Platform Support. Existing AM5 motherboards will be compatible with Ryzen 9000 CPUs after a simple BIOS update. Additionally, AMD is introducing a new lineup of 800-series chipsets for new motherboards. While these chipsets offer mostly minor improvements over the 600-series, they do provide some noteworthy features:
- X870E and X870: Guaranteed to have USB 4 ports.
- X870: Supports PCIe 5.0 speeds for the primary graphics card slot (compared to PCIe 4.0 on the X670).
- B850: Supports PCIe 5.0 for storage devices and PCIe 4.0 for graphics cards.

The lower-tier chipsets, B840 and below, offer some limitations:
- B840: Restricted to PCIe 3.0 for all components and doesn’t support CPU overclocking (RAM overclocking remains available).
Overall, the combination of power-efficient Ryzen 9000 processors and the extended AM5 platform support timeline makes it an attractive proposition for PC builders looking for a future-proof system.
