The OnePlus 16 is shaping up to be a major display upgrade, with the latest leak revealing more details about the phone’s high-refresh-rate screen. OnePlus is reportedly working closely with BOE on a new-generation display that could make 165Hz available across a wider range of system and application scenarios.
Tipster Digital Chat Station has been sharing details about the upcoming flagship’s display, following an earlier report that OnePlus and BOE have jointly developed a new X4 light-emitting material. The new material is expected to improve efficiency while also extending the display’s lifespan.
OnePlus 16 could offer 165Hz system-wide

According to Digital Chat Station, the OnePlus 16 will feature a next-generation BOE Oriental Screen capable of running at 165Hz across the system.
This could be a more meaningful upgrade than simply increasing the panel’s maximum refresh rate. The higher refresh rate is reportedly designed to work across more system interfaces and supported applications rather than being limited to specific scenarios.
The OnePlus 15 already comes with a 165Hz display, so the successor’s advantage could come from how extensively that refresh rate is utilized.
New BOE X4 material could improve efficiency
The OnePlus 16’s display is also expected to use the new X4 light-emitting material developed jointly by OnePlus and BOE.
OnePlus has previously claimed that the material performed better than Samsung’s M-series display material in the company’s internal testing. It is also said to consume less power and provide a longer operating lifespan.
If these improvements translate into real-world performance, the new panel could deliver smoother visuals without significantly increasing the phone’s power consumption.
The phone is also expected to retain a flat display with extremely narrow bezels surrounding all four sides.
Gaming could reach 185Hz
While 165Hz could become the system-wide refresh rate, gaming is reportedly where the OnePlus 16 will push the display further.
The phone is said to support refresh rates of up to 185Hz in compatible games. This could provide smoother motion and faster visual feedback in supported titles, although the actual benefits will depend on game support and optimization.
OnePlus has also confirmed that it is working on several gaming-related improvements, including its high-refresh-rate technology, Fengchi Gaming Core and e-sports triple-core technology.
Together, these technologies are expected to improve the gaming experience on the upcoming flagship.
ColorOS 17 could make animations smoother
In China, the OnePlus 16 is expected to launch with ColorOS 17. The software could be optimized specifically for the phone’s high-refresh-rate display.
New system-level animations are reportedly being developed to take advantage of the faster screen, making scrolling, transitions and other interface movements appear smoother.
The combination of a 165Hz system-wide refresh rate and improved animations could make the phone feel more responsive during everyday use.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro could power the phone
The display improvements will reportedly be accompanied by flagship hardware under the hood.
The OnePlus 16 is tipped to use Qualcomm’s upcoming 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset, which should provide a significant performance upgrade over the previous generation.
Other rumored specifications include a 200MP primary camera with a 1/1.4-inch sensor, a 50MP ultrawide camera and a 50MP 3.5x periscope telephoto camera.
This would give the OnePlus 16 a more versatile camera setup while keeping the focus on high-end performance.
OnePlus 16 could launch in October
The OnePlus 16 is currently rumored to debut in October. However, OnePlus has not officially confirmed the launch date or the specifications mentioned in these leaks.
If the reported display upgrades materialize, the 165Hz system-wide refresh rate and 185Hz gaming mode could become some of the phone’s biggest selling points.
For now, the OnePlus 16 remains unconfirmed, and details such as its final specifications, pricing and exact launch date could still change before the official announcement.
