Samsung could significantly expand its foldable smartphone portfolio in 2027, with a new report suggesting that the company is preparing as many as five different models. The lineup is expected to include two wide-format foldables, alongside the next-generation Galaxy Z Fold, Galaxy Z Flip, and TriFold series.
According to a report from ETnews, citing industry sources familiar with Samsung’s plans, the company is discussing a five-device foldable lineup for 2027. Two of these models are reportedly set to adopt a wider display format, building on the design direction introduced with the Galaxy Z Fold8.
Samsung’s rumored 2027 foldable lineup
The lineup reportedly being presented to Samsung’s partners includes:
- Galaxy Z Fold9 with a wide-format design
- A second unnamed wide-format foldable
- Galaxy Z Fold9 Ultra with a more traditional tall-and-narrow design
- Galaxy Z Flip9
- Galaxy Z TriFold2
If the report proves accurate, Samsung’s strategy would represent a notable expansion of its foldable range, giving customers more form factors to choose from instead of relying primarily on the conventional Fold and Flip designs.
Samsung appears to be betting on wider foldables
Samsung’s interest in wider foldable phones reportedly comes from the response to the Galaxy Z Fold8. Unlike earlier Fold models that used a relatively tall and narrow outer design, the Fold8 moved toward a shorter body and a 4:3-style internal display.
The wider screen is particularly useful for activities such as watching videos, browsing the web and scrolling through social media. Early sales figures have reportedly given Samsung further reason to continue developing the format.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 is said to have accounted for around 70% of pre-orders across the Galaxy Z8 series, while the entire series reportedly reached 1.44 million pre-orders in South Korea. That represents a 39% increase compared with the previous generation.
Those numbers could explain why Samsung is reportedly preparing another wide-format model instead of limiting the design to the Galaxy Z Fold8.
The second wide foldable could take a different approach
Interestingly, Samsung’s second wide-format foldable is not expected to simply copy the Galaxy Z Fold8’s 4:3 screen.
According to the report, the upcoming device could feature an aspect ratio that is better optimized for watching video content. This suggests Samsung may be experimenting with a more conventional widescreen-style display while retaining the advantages of a foldable form factor.
However, the project is reportedly still in its early stages. Details such as the exact screen dimensions, hinge mechanism, specifications and pricing have yet to be finalized.
Galaxy Z Fold9 Ultra could keep the traditional design
While Samsung appears to be increasing its focus on wider displays, the rumored Galaxy Z Fold9 Ultra could maintain the more familiar tall-and-narrow foldable design.
This would give Samsung two distinct directions within its Fold lineup: a wider model aimed at everyday usability and multimedia consumption, and an Ultra variant that retains the traditional Fold form factor.
It remains unclear how Samsung would position the two devices in terms of features and pricing, particularly if both are released alongside another unnamed wide foldable.
Five foldables could give Samsung more options
If Samsung follows through with these plans, its 2027 foldable lineup could become one of the company’s most diverse yet. The Galaxy Z Fold9, Fold9 Ultra, Flip9 and TriFold2 would target different form factors, while the two wide-format models could appeal to users who want larger screens with a design optimized for productivity and entertainment.
For now, however, these details should be treated as early information rather than confirmed specifications. Samsung’s plans could still change before the devices reach the market.
